The Mediums Collective

Porter Grubbs (he/they) is an interdisciplinary dance, installation, and performance artist currently based in Atlanta, GA. They began their formal dance training under the instruction of Dominique Angel at Troy University and at the 2014 American Dance Festival with Brenda Daniels, Tom Weinberger, and Kate Skarpetowska. They have trained extensively in various movement techniques including Countertechnique, Fighting Monkeys, Flying Low & Passing Through, capoeira, ballet, contemporary floorwork, and Cunningham. They attribute much of their current performance practice to the work and mentorship of David Zambrano and Rosie Herrera, an improvisation artist and dance theatre artist, respectively.

They are currently the artistic director of The Mediums Collective, a group of independent collaborators that design and choreograph immersive performance installations. During their time in Atlanta they have received multiple residencies via Fly on a Wall and Active Space, and their performance installation work has been commissioned by Kit Modus and ShowerHaus Gallery. Their artistic research invokes movement and gathering as fundamental tools for healing and reclaims the magic of ritual and the radical agency of imagination. They facilitate the practice of emotional proprioception through their teachings on improvisation and embodiment. Their language for this kind of work is a unique amalgamation of dance forms from the European & African diasporas, Chinese & Brazilian martial arts, theatre and dance improvisation, storytelling, and 3D visual art.
